Toxic Foods

Why some human foods are toxic

Dogs and cats metabolize things differently than humans. What's harmless to us can overwhelm their liver, kidneys, or nervous system.

๐Ÿซ Chocolate

The science

Chocolate contains theobromine โ€” a compound similar to caffeine. Humans metabolize it quickly. Dogs take 17+ hours to process the same amount, allowing it to build to toxic levels.

Danger by type

White
Low
Milk
Medium
Dark/Baker's
High
Quick numbers
20
mg/kg mild symptoms
40+
mg/kg cardiac effects

A 20lb dog eating 1oz of dark chocolate = danger zone.
Same dog eating 1oz of milk chocolate = likely okay but monitor.

What to watch for

โœ“ Chocolate-Safe Home

Storage
  • Keep all chocolate in closed cabinets, not counters
  • Baking chocolate = highest risk, store highest
  • Remind guests during holidays
  • Check kids' Halloween/Easter candy spots
If it happens anyway
  • Know your dog's weight (write it down now)
  • Save Poison Control: 1-800-222-1222
  • Save ASPCA Animal Poison: 888-426-4435
  • Keep hydrogen peroxide 3% (to induce vomiting IF directed)
๐ŸŽฏ You now know:
  • Why chocolate is toxic (theobromine + slow metabolism)
  • Dark > Milk > White (danger scale)
  • Symptoms timeline (2-12+ hours)
  • How to prevent and respond

๐Ÿฌ Xylitol

โš ๏ธ More dangerous than chocolate

Xylitol causes massive insulin release in dogs within 10-60 minutes. Blood sugar crashes. Liver failure can follow within 72 hours.

Hidden in
  • Sugar-free gum (1-2 pieces can harm small dogs)
  • Sugar-free candy and mints
  • Peanut butter (check labels!)
  • Toothpaste, mouthwash
  • Some medications and vitamins
Timeline
  • 10-60 min: Vomiting, weakness, collapse
  • 12-24 hours: Liver damage may begin
  • 24-72 hours: Liver failure (if untreated)

๐Ÿ‡ Grapes & Raisins

The mystery

Scientists still don't know exactly why grapes are toxic to dogs. The best current theory: tartaric acid varies between grapes, which may explain why some dogs are affected more than others.

No safe amount

Unlike chocolate, there's no known safe dose. Some dogs eat grapes with no effect. Others develop kidney failure from a few. Treat every exposure as serious.

Also includes
  • Raisins (concentrated = worse)
  • Currants
  • Grape juice
  • Wine (alcohol + grapes)

๐Ÿง… Onions & Garlic

The science

Alliums contain compounds that damage red blood cells, causing them to rupture. This leads to anemia. Effects are cumulative โ€” small amounts over time add up.

The whole family
  • Onions (most dangerous)
  • Garlic (5x more concentrated than onion)
  • Leeks
  • Chives
  • Shallots
Watch out for
  • Baby food (often contains onion powder)
  • Pizza, pasta sauces
  • Soups and broths
  • Seasoning blends
